Love this cookbook - 1 month ago. I have the paperback version and it is well loved, marked, and used as a regular reference for all things cooking. There are lovely old recipes and more modern ones but always something to get me started when I am pulling something together. Did you? Helpful Not helpful Report review. Disappointed - 1 year ago. The size of the book is very misleading.
You can imagine my excitement when I came across it being offered. Can barely thumb thru the book because keeping the book open is impossible due to the thickness combined with the small size, the 2 ingredients that doesn't make a "good recipe" for what this cookbook was so well known for. This was a tasty way to use up leftover cooked egg noodles and boeuf bourguignon. I sauteed some mushrooms with the onion. In a 9"x13" Pyrex dish, the casserole was done in min. This basic recipe hasn't changed since my edition :. That's the variation I made, using homemade peel I'd packed in syrup that's very tender.
I subtracted the 2 tbsp of flour. These were surprisingly good - the large amount of orange peel was really delicious. The basic cake part did its job supporting the peel and had a slightly springy but not tough texture. On its own, it'd be on the plain side, but it's a fine background for various add-ins or spreading with butter and jam. This is a fine, basic corn bread recipe. I prefer the flavor that comes from using buttermilk, soured milk, or thinned yogurt in place of regular milk.
I loved the dark, spicy flavor of these but the texture was off - like a wet, dense, "underbaked" brownie and more tender than chewy. I'm hoping that the main cause was that I pre-soaked my raisins which had seemed dry - I won't do that next time. I used homemade candied peel packed in sugar syrup - I squeezed it out but it was still very moist.
Since their flavor is very good, I'll try these again. In the meantime, the "gooey" version might make a good mix-in for a batch of vanilla ice cream Automatically add future editions to my Bookshelf. Browse our Cookbooks or Become a Member. Notes about this book BlytheSpirit on January 31, I like the beef stew recipe and lazy daisy cake.
Lindalib on June 13, Very easy and straightforward, although having weighed all the ingredients, I don't think it made as much as the recipe indicated. Loved it. The revision was the last one revised by Fannie Merritt Farmer before her death. Over years there have 13th editions published with many reprints in between and over seven million copies sold. In the edition there is still a bookmark from my Grandma in the pages with recipes for muffins, popovers, corn bread and johnnycake. I decided to try the corn bread recipe as I believe it is something my Grandma may have made. Amazingly I had all of the ingredients on hand in my pantry and fridge.
In my pantry I have vegetable shortening so I used that for the corn bread. The recipe is very straightforward and easy to follow. The corn bread was moist and delicious. I am so grateful to Fannie Merritt Farmer for creating the standardized measurements we use today. Trust me I have tried to recreate a dish my Mom makes without a recipe before and had it come out a disaster, looking at you pepper steak.
